Not every career begins at cruising altitude, but for many at SmartLynx, the skies are just the start. We’re proud to see so many of our colleagues who have started their aviation careers as Cabin Crew and, throughout the years, evolved into senior administrative positions on the ground.

Starting off our Crew to Office article series, we highlight Lauris Kiukucans – our Security Manager. His story is one of determination, adaptability, and an enduring passion for aviation.    

Before pursuing a career in aviation, Lauris Kiukucans – now Security Manager, ERP Coordinator, and Senior Ground Instructor at SmartLynx Airlines, was searching for a job that would allow him to travel, work in shifts, and could be combined with his studies at the university. For him, the time as a Cabin Crew was exciting but very challenging. "Lots of travel and sleepless nights," he recalls. 

While working as a Cabin Crew Member, Lauris was instantly drawn to the understanding and mastery of the details and the excellence of the technical and security procedures for operating the flight. "To me, it was like a mission – to be on time. Punctuality was the best achievement, and you could achieve it only when working as a team." 

When Lauris was given the opportunity to take the next step and join the Training department, he immediately accepted it. "I believe it was my visible passion for aviation, planning skills, high standards, and work ethics that allowed me to succeed in this industry and particularly further proceed with a career in security," he adds.

The urge for challenge and passion for aviation also motivated the decision to join the high-risk flights in conflict regions in Africa, "It was very challenging, but it also gave me an experience I wouldn't be able to gain in usual passenger flights. It made my skin thicker and improved my stress tolerance and decision-making abilities." Lauris shares.

So, here’s to Lauris and all our colleagues who took off from the cabin and now keep us flying high in new ways!
