Liquids
The EU regulation on carriage of liquids in aircraft cabin entered into force on 6 November 2006. The regulation is applied in all EU countries and in Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, which also implement the EU security regulation.
The regulation restricts the quantity of liquids allowed to be taken in the cabin as hand baggage. Any liquids that a passenger intends to bring on board with him/her must be shown at security check.
The regulation strives to prevent the threat of liquid explosives used for terrorism. The aim is to protect everyone travelling by air.
In the scope of prevalent regulations, liquids are defined as:
- liquid and viscous substances;
- gels, pastes and lotions, such as toothpaste;
- hair gel;
- drinks;
- soups;
- syrups;
- gel lipstick;
- perfume;
- contact lens fluid;
- shaving foam and aerosols.
Liquids do not include:
- solid lipstick;
- lip cream;
- medicine tablets & powders.
In the Cabin
You may take liquids with you in the cabin, but there are limitations. Prepare to present all liquids at the security check. Pack the liquids and corresponding prescriptions and doctor's orders in a separate bag to ease the security check.
A passenger may take liquids into the cabin as carry-on baggage, when
- the liquids are packed in containers of no more than 100 ml;
- the 100 ml containers are in a resalable, see-through plastic bag, of 1 liter in volume.
Important! The bag must be resalable and see-through.
Allowed in the cabin (no volume restrictions)
- baby food and drink needed during the flight;
- prescribed medicine needed during the flight;
- other doctor ordered liquids needed during the flight;
- drinks needed by people with dietary restrictions.
Important! The authenticity of medication, liquids and baby food and drink must be confirmed at request at the security check.
Check-in Baggage
Liquids cannot freeze in the cargo hold and are suitable to be packed in the check-in baggage. Extra liquids not allowed in the cabin may still be transported in the cargo hold.
What to Pack in the check-in baggage:
- Sun creams
- Skin lotions
- Hair gels
- Shampoos
- Hair conditioner
- Disinfectants
- Hair sprays
- Perfumes
Note! The amount of flammable liquids is restricted also for check-in baggage. Aerosols (hairspray, styling mousse) and other easily flammable substances such as disinfectants and nail polish remover are restricted to 500 ml per container and 2 litres total per passenger.
Liquid Duty Free Purchases
Liquid duty-free products purchased on the day of travel may be taken into the cabin as long as the unopened items and a receipt are presented at the security check. The regulation is in effect in EU countries, Norway and Switzerland.
Trips inside the EU
In some airports, duty-free shops are located on the airside (passengers with tickets only) but before the security check. If you purchase liquid products from these shops, the shop must pack the liquids in a sealed plastic bag.
Prepare to present the liquids in the sealed bag and a receipt at the security check. Some shops allow the passengers to claim the purchased items only after the security check.
Trips from 3rd countries into the EU
If the passenger does not have a continuing flight inside the EU, liquid duty-free purchases may be made freely in the country of origin and on board the airplane. If the trip does continue inside the EU, a security check will be performed when transferring and the passenger can again only have 100 ml containers of liquid in a 1 liter plastic bag, so the passenger must pack these items in the check-in baggage.
